Hi all. As you may be aware, Stellar Forces (and all my other server-based games) has been down since Sunday morning due to a hard disk making strange clicking noises and refusing to boot. It's now back up as of a few minutes ago. Unfortunately my earliest backup is about a week old, which is why the games you are seeing are old ones. Sorry about that. The main forums are missing as well, which is why I've had to fall back to these ones.
I'm going to see if I can use a data recovery service to recover the old data. This will probably take a few days, and if it works, all this will get replaced with the original up-to-date data. So in a nutshell, please feel free to start any games, but if the data recovery is successful they will disappear when the data is fully restored. I'll post again here when I've got an answer from the hardware people.
Apologies for the inconvenience. Hopefully things will get back to normal soon, and I've learnt the hard way to make more frequent backups.
Backup strategy is a key element in everybody's life after the main crash happens. Once we had a customer who realized that their backups cannot be restored. They have lost a lot of data. For home a simple raid disk solution costs approximately 320 dollars and it is just a static storage, not an advanced database server disk array. I had similar clicking sound with my hardddisk after I have droped it from 30 cm. It costed me 260 dollars to get the head, sliders, actuator parts replaced. It was very cheap. Normally it is around 600 dollars. I was able to recover 100% of the data from the harddisk. I hope the best for your hard disk.
I know you have had problems with the server and look like they have been fixed which is great but I have just returned to game 24357 and I appear to be one of my mates team now as my guys were mainly positioned at the top right as attackers! Can this be reversed?
Hokunda: It's been a wake-up call to my arrogance/laziness about backups. Thankfully all my source code was backup up. I hope the repairs doesn't cost that much! The disk is going in today so I'll find out the problem soon.
JoeFrazer: Not sure what you mean exactly? Have you got control of the wrong side? Let me know I can fix it. BTW, probably best to reply either in the game chat for that game or msg me to avoid confusing this thread. :)
Just a thought about restoring from backup. I might not actually do a restore (even if it is going to be possible): only a week's worth of data has been lost, and it means everyone can start playing properly as of now rather that wait a few days to see what happens. Unless anyone knows a good reason why?
After thinking about it for at least another 5 mins, I've decided I'm *not* going to restore the game data. I hope this doesn't affect anyone too much. Apart from all the other good reasons, it also means I can now allow new players to join again, since otherwise their logins would have disappeared when I restored the data. So all the games that are currently being played or started from this point on, are safe.
I will restore the old forums though, if possible.
Sounds sensible and fine with me Steve. I've only lost 5 league points and the Campaign sectors are only a little bit different but that won't matter much once the fighting gets going!
Wow i have slept on the keyboard And erased my nicely formed message. Whatever. No restoration is fine for me. Globex has a second chance to defend their northern sectors.
Hi Hokunda, Sorry for your Campaign sector losses. This may make up for it. Troll has been and will be absent from Campaign games for a month or so. Globex is down to a 2 man team. Not sure if we can defend and attack successfully at the same time with given resources. Though I am considering a jedi crash course. Other options available a steam cleaner, Insania fitness course, no no facial hair remover and slim n' lift jeans. If I do all of the above you will have no trouble recognising me on the battlefield. All the best, Pete.
Hey just letting you know that if you click forums in the client it doesn't work. Glad the games are back you don't realise how much you enjoy 2 mins of strategy a few times a day till you haven't got it!
