What do you think about the possibility of having a camera (like these new modern weapons) or mirror (classic) so that you can see what is round the corner without stepping out. It could be added to a weapon or used itself
I'm not so sure. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but it would remove the whole hide around a corner with opportunity fire tactic which is a massive part of Laser Squad/Stellar Forces game play. It only sounds like a small change, but tactically it would have massive consequences. No one would be stupid enough to step around a corner without checking it first ever again.
Maybe if it was combined with the addition of a perception skill like I just mentioned or something like that, but as things are I would say no.
It definitely would change the game, but a lot of the game now is kind of a "gotcha" that seems both unrealistic and encourages camping on opp fire as opposed to actively engaging the enemy. No soldier in real life is going to go around a corner without looking first, so why are our guys so dumb?
Maybe an alternative would be to have a "look around corner option" which still gives the chance that you're going to get shot (and in the head at that), but reduces the accuracy to reflect the smaller target. The visual result could even be "an enemy" as opposed to a specific named enemy if that matters.
Again, no idea how easy it is to program any of that, just an idea.
Realism wise I totally agree with you knowman, but from a gaming perspective that all sounds very complicated. I always figured that stepping around a corner was the games alternative/simulation of poking your head around. Either way there is a chance of you being shot. It's not perfectly realistic I know, but this is only a game after all.
I keep harping on about Perception at the moment but by adding that it would eliminate the "gotcha" (as you put it) dead certainty of opportunity fire without massively changing the game play. I always though it was a good method, and with Steve thinking about implementing hearing I think it would make sense to use it like that.
I do recognize that it's a game and it's going to have quirks. Realism can be over-rated too. :-) I'll have to go back and find your post about Perception as I have been away from the game for a bit and must have missed that discussion.
